You don’t need expensive soaps and exotic oils to make your own diaper wipes solution (although it certainly doesn’t hurt). If you’re in a hurry, low on cash, or just like to keep things simple, these basic recipes will work just fine for most babies.
As Simple As It Gets
- A little baby oil
- A little baby wash
- Some water
You don’t even have to measure! Use any type of baby oil and baby wash you want.
Ordinary Everyday
- 1 tbsp baby oil
- 1 tbsp baby wash
- 2 cups water
When in doubt, use a light hand with the cleansers and oils.
But I Don’t Have Baby Wash
- 1 tbsp baby oil
- 1 tbsp baby shampoo
- 2 cups water
Usually, baby shampoo works just as well as baby wash.
But I Don’t Have Baby Oil
- 1 tbsp baby shampoo or wash
- 1 tbsp food-grade cooking oil
- 2 cups water
You can also substitute cooking oil for baby oil.
Are You Sure That’s Enough?
- 1/2 cup baby oil
- 1/2 cup baby wash
- 2 cups water
Feel free to play with the ratio of ingredients to suit your needs.
Helpful Hints
If your baby has sensitive skin, sometimes the only diaper wipes “solution” is plain lukewarm water. Use distilled water to avoid the harsh minerals and chemicals that can be found in tap water.
Use 100% pure, natural ingredients whenever possible, or try to buy baby wash and baby oil with the least unnatural chemicals. (See product recommendations at the end of this post.)
To avoid the growth of mold and bacteria, we recommend making very small batches of wipes solution and saving any excess in the refrigerator. You’ll need a sealed plastic container or a spray bottle to hold your solution at the changing table.
